Verbatim: Westmalle Dubbel. A fine example of a Trappist beer, them being the only thing to tempt me towards Religion.

Afterthoughts, October 2010: That beer list made for a handy prop. Little did I know I’d eventually take over its editing, and spend endless nerdy hours tinkering with layouts and fonts and phrasing.

1: I mean, I say so. And I've had a nice day wandering around Melbourne ticking off Things To Do (like the excellent little Untitled Goose Exhibition at ACMI), so I'm in the mood to declare it, and claiming the authority to do so. Objections? Didn't think so.

Given one of my favourite beers, this felt a bit like a pilgrimage. The photos don't convey how cold it was down there over the weekend, but as a Wellingtonian a dose of bracing Southern ocean air did me good. Sadly none of the beer was around to take with us — so we had a Thermos of Earl Grey tea instead. (Last photo is a flashback to twelve years ago, when we took the beer to another Gunnamatta, in NSW.)

There's another new post up on Beer Diary, and this beer deserves partial credit. It's a lovely little brown ale called 'Brown Corduroy' and when a customer took the time to jokingly check whether it was brewed with actual pants, I had to go and finish off an old draft about a hop called anchovy, eye-roll-inducing attempts at April Fools humour, and the generally awkward relationship between craft beer and comedy.

There's a new post up on the Beer Diary, made with admittedly-old data. Recent awards here in Australia convinced me to finish off the number-crunching I did for last year's NZ Beer Awards. I dug out some interesting little details, highlighted some trends, and have a few things to watch out for as this year's round looms.

(And now I'm halfway through the AIBAs much bigger and much messier dataset, because I am a sucker for spreadsheet-based punishments.)

Stopped by the new @oddculturefitzroy on my way home last night and had a lovely @lasirenebrewing Wild Ale in one of Melbourne's better-decorated alleyways. Also a big fan of the retro Melbourne Bitter ad inside — although I assume it's a reconstruction rather than a relic.

The fact that it was too big for the bollard turned out to be only the third most-annoying thing about this poster. But that did lead to be finally putting a new post up on Beer Diary (now at diary.beer for extra-easy remembering)— on Fixation, provenance, and the awkwardness of reliving old glory.
