Emerson’s Brewers’ Reserve: ‘Grace Jones’ Porter

November 10, 2010 Phil Leave a comment

The Emerson’s brewers are here doing their own version of the Barry White joke I made in reference to their Oatmeal Stout. Not that I’m claiming credit, of course. But it’s nice to have a “thinking alike” moment now and then. Much like the recent Southern Clam Stout, ‘Grace’ does make for another worthy successor … Continue reading Emerson’s Brewers’ Reserve: ‘Grace Jones’ Porter →

Nice™ to be back here, too. It's cozy, there's a Nice™ to be back here, too. It's cozy, there's an ESB on handpull, and the burble of a few dozen locals on their lunchbreak. Extremely Satisfying Beertimes.
Nearly cried when I saw those buckets. It feels li Nearly cried when I saw those buckets. It feels like I've fallen into a nearby parallel dimension; different people work at @goldingsfd, and a few other things have conspicuously changed around town, but many other things are comfortably the same — and given the weirdness of the last few years in Melbourne, it somehow feels like barely any time has passed since I was last here. It's nice to see you again for a little while, Wellington, you've been missed.
It's been a while, but there's a couple of new pos It's been a while, but there's a couple of new posts up on the blog (at diary.beer). I've taken the results of the last few runnings of the @brewersguildnz awards and crunched the numbers a bit to get a better view of who is doing well and what's going on by way of trends and patterns and little curiosities hiding in the details.

Meanwhile, I ain't no fancy big city beer judge, but I did take @garageproject's Chance, Luck and Magic winning 'Champion NZ Beer' two years in a row as an excuse to drop $49 and try it — and it did not disappoint.
I've been working for @rangebrewing for a little w I've been working for @rangebrewing for a little while now, and today I finally got to visit the mothership in Brisbane. First pour, naturally, was a 'big' (that's a 480ml, which I'm happy calling a "pint" but other people get weird about it) of C R I S P, from the side-pull tap. Absolute bliss. Super interesting to see the brewery itself, too; somehow no matter how many you look around, there's always some curious little details.
I'm up in Brisbane briefly for a work meeting / ge I'm up in Brisbane briefly for a work meeting / get-together, and after a day of delayed and mucked-about flights, first stop was the gorgeous Breakfast Creek Hotel, a massive shambling venue made of equal parts divey and bougie touches, where I had a very creditable chicken parma, and three different varieties of XXXX. Utterly delighted to notice, on the way out, that the sign is on the fritz and Fourecks is 'The Popular Bee'.
It's still the weekend, if you work like I work. S It's still the weekend, if you work like I work. So Melbourne's Unofficial Lager Weekend continued today, with a bike ride up to @carwyncellars for some excellent beers (there were others, but the first pictured is @hopnationbeer's Italian Pils version of my beloved Rattenhund, the second is Köstrizer Schwarzbier — and the sign says Lager Is King but a) Instagram won't let me post a pair of wide-ratio photos and b) I don't think monarchy-words are compliments). Pair that with a very serendipitous appearance by some comrades old and new, and it made for a lovely Monday/Saturday.
This weekend, in Melbourne, there are two (2) lage This weekend, in Melbourne, there are two (2) lager-based events on the go simultaneously. Which, frankly, feels like progress in a wonderful direction. I stopped by @stompinggroundcw on my way to work for a couple of shandies (which were given a prominent place in the pitch and promo for the occasion), and will hopefully get up to @carwyncellars before the weekend is out — their lager takeover was a genuinely highlight of 2021, for me.
An excellent antidote to difficult times, this. Th An excellent antidote to difficult times, this. The pilsner itself must be a strong contender for Beer Of The Year 2021 — and paired with sunshine (after a merciful drop in humidity) and fried things on the waterfront after a bike ride, it's basically unbeatable.
Celebrating ten years of @garageproject and ten ye Celebrating ten years of @garageproject and ten years since 24/24 with Pernicious Weed (#3, the NZ-hopped IPA which I missed on launch night since I had to dash off to work down the road) and Day Of The Dead (#19, the chili-chocolate black lager which was my standout favourite of the bunch and a recurring delight every year after).

My note that their start was "promising stuff" is likely one of the all-time understatements in my Diary. It's been a stunning first decade and endless fun to see what they get up to — and a few years behind the scenes at the brewery early on will always be a highlight of my time is this business.
Cheers to ten years, Parrots. (And for sending the Cheers to ten years, Parrots. (And for sending these all the way over here to me. I'm very sorry I can't be in Wellington to celebrate with y'all in person this week, but... you know.)

I remember the early days very well — it was me they asked, at Malthouse, if they could share some homebrew with the professional brewers in the room; I said sure, so long as *I* could have some, too. And it turns out I've been one of them — in my small way; writing the notes on their labels — for half of their first decade. Where does the time go?
