Yeastie Boys ‘Blondie: Rapture’

March 11, 2011 Phil Leave a comment

As much I was enjoying the relative novelty of a Friday Night Off, I was also having a Bit Of A Day. The Gonzo and the writing helped somewhat, but when I returned to the Malthouse and saw that a few tap beers had run out, necessitating a fridge shuffle, I volunteered to sort it … Continue reading Yeastie Boys ‘Blondie: Rapture’ →

Tuatara ‘Ardennes’

September 30, 2010 Phil Leave a comment

‘Ardennes’ is one of those beers that I forget about for ages, only to pleasantly surprise myself when I go back to it. In this case, I was cleaning out the fridge one night — as I do; I’ve turned it from a chore into a sport and an artform, and have dubbed it ‘Kegtris’1 … Continue reading Tuatara ‘Ardennes’ →

The Beta Band were an absolute delight last night The Beta Band were an absolute delight last night at the 9:30 Club. The reunion tour was announced not long after we moved to DC and it felt like a real stroke of luck to catch them here after being a fan for so long; one of those dream gigs I'll be thinking about for ages.

And if that last photo puts a Dry The Rain earworm straight in your brain, then you're one of us.

That's something I can very much get on board with — and, if I'm honest, effectively celebrate regularly anyway, on my own time. I feel the same way about chips in a sandwich as I do about ice cream in beer; they make for a beautifully transformative pairing that more people should try.

If you want sandwich advice: soft white bread is a must, mayo is better and easier than butter, cheese is a great addition, and pretty much any chip variety works, each in its own way. Meanwhile, for the beer floats: plain ice cream is best and avoids clashing flavours, nice rich stout is the classic (we miss you, #stoutfloatnight), but a fruit sour is freakin' amazing too.

A brilliant day out; A+, would Snally again. Minimal notes taken, but I'll do my best to backfill my Diary tomorrow. Plus it's always nice to see a downtown street used for something other than cars.
Something of an accidental mini-Oktoberfest for us Something of an accidental mini-Oktoberfest for us yesterday; all three @lostlagers / @rightproperbeer 'Senate' beers — recreations of old recipes from DC's historic Heurich brewery, in the @1921biergarten behind the founder's mansion.

We had booked in for a tour of the house without realising the appropriateness of the date. It's an impressive piece of conservation, our guide was excellent, and there were a million brilliant little details to discover and digest over beers after.
It's New Zealand Hop Week at @otherhalfdc, and eve It's New Zealand Hop Week at @otherhalfdc, and everything positively stinks of home in the best possible way. A Riwaka Pilsner rescued me from the heat of the bike ride here, and the treats kept coming; a Kiwi-hop XPA, plural juicy hazy things in a flight — and currently a big heavy mug of Snaps, which is always heavy on the Motueka.

I think there's a lot of lessons still to be fully learned from the saga, both in terms of how to think about the rules, and how to make a reference like this in the first place.

Prompted by the latest round of The Session (a monthly group blogging event, recently resurrected) to think about "the best beer you can drink at home right now", I kind of have to preface everything with a belated update as to what counts as "home" — but, don't panic, the eventual answer is still a deliciously boring lager.
