By very simple extension, women can be beer enthusiasts, bar owners, beer writers, and brewers. There&#8217;s a lot more to say on the subject, obviously, but it&#8217;s not really my gig to hold forth given my obvious lack of lived experience \u2014\u00a0a Very Special Podcast Episode was recorded this weekend\u00a0which will probably elaborate thereon, instead, and <em>that<\/em> reminded me about\u00a0<em>this<\/em> tasty beer and its\u00a0somewhat-unusual context.<\/p>\n<p>LBQ \u2014 that is to say, <a title=\"littlebeerquarter.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/littlebeerquarter.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Little Beer Quarter<\/a>; a well-established bar here in town which happens to be owned by women \u2014 was hosting a mini-tap-takeover by Moa, a company with something of a well-deserved reputation of boorish, sexist and otherwise-bigoted marketing. Personally, it was admittedly gratifying to be reminded that I wasn&#8217;t alone in holding a grudge. A lot of people will independently bring up their history of appalling marketing and cite it as a reason for not buying their beer, skipping their offering at a festival, or not going to an event of theirs.\u00a0We are, after all, enjoying a preposterous embarrassment of riches in our options\u00a0in the beer world, so it&#8217;s relatively easy to boycott something for over a year and not really feel like you&#8217;re missing out at all. Consumer choice wide enough allows consumer judgement on any criteria they feel like applying \u2014 which is <em>precisely<\/em>\u00a0how things should be. Moa, it has to be said,\u00a0had\u00a0been keeping their heads <em>relatively<\/em> low, lately;<a href=\"#fn-unite4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-unite4\"><\/a>\u00a0it looks like they thought they could just slink away from their prior bullshit and have everyone quietly forget about it \u2014 and <em>it looks like they were wrong<\/em>. Re-starting with a\u00a0sincere &#8220;we screwed\u00a0up\u00a0\u2014\u00a0we acted gross, and we&#8217;re not going to do it again; we&#8217;re actually mostly going to get out of the way and let the beer speak for itself&#8221; could do a lot.<a href=\"#fn-unite5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-unite5\"><\/a>\u00a0They&#8217;ve conspicuously failed to make any kind of attempt in that direction, and that&#8217;s unfortunate for all concerned.<\/p>\n<p>And maybe LBQ were still giving them a nudge in the ribs even as they hosted this perhaps-premature event, because on the afternoon of the takeover, they announced that they&#8217;d tapped a keg of the Beer Baroness-brewed edition of &#8216;Unite&#8217; Pale Ale, <a title=\"iwcbd.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iwcbd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">the International Women&#8217;s Day collaboration beer<\/a>. So\u00a0I had that,\u00a0for my own point-making circumstantial reasons, but I&#8217;ll eagerly have it again for its inherent deliciousness because it was just splendid. Nice how that works out, sometimes. A zippy little sessionable pale ale, it was very much My Thing \u2014 and a fresh batch is reputedly On The Way.\u00a0The titular Baroness is <a title=\"@beerbaronessnz\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/beerbaronessnz\" target=\"_blank\">Ava Wilson<\/a>, who is also the manager of the ridiculously wonderful Pomeroy&#8217;s Pub, convenor for the NZ chapter of the <a title=\"pinkbootssociety.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinkbootssociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pink Boots Society<\/a> (soon to have <a title=\"Beervana: Pink Boots Society Meeting\" href=\"http:\/\/beervana.co.nz\/event-info\/pink-boots-society-meeting\" target=\"_blank\">its inaugural meeting<\/a>, and the mothership of which organised <a title=\"Ava, first to mash in on IWCBD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=733782529976436&amp;set=a.733782686643087.1073741825.500584143296277\" target=\"_blank\">the global brewday<\/a>), seminar-wrangler for the Great Kiwi Beer Festival, and an all-round superawesome individual. If you, like Moa&#8217;s marketing suits, live in the same country as Ava and you still don&#8217;t think women could be &#8220;beer people&#8221; then I submit that you are an ignorant retrograde.<\/p>\n<p>I would at least <em>hope<\/em> \u2014 in a rare fit of optimism \u2014 that the craft beer &#8216;community&#8217; was on the whole a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable place for women to be.\u00a0Better than &#8216;the average&#8217;\u00a0(non-beer bars and festivals, the public at large..?), maybe, somehow. But the thing itself hardly needs an excuse; really nicely zippy + zesty hoppy little 4% thing. Not hugely weather-appropriate, but the bar is super cozy anyway. Lots of interesting reactions to this event, but my take is just that it&#8217;s premature. Apologetic fronting-up,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">then<\/span> the charm offensive and re-focus on the beer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite1\"><\/a><strong>1:<\/strong> If I felt like quibbling \u2014 and, let&#8217;s face it, I basically always do \u2014 I&#8217;d say &#8220;begins with&#8221; rather than &#8220;is&#8221;. But it&#8217;s a damn fine slogan, and at least damn close to the mark.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-unite1\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite2\"><\/a><strong>2:<\/strong> With &#8220;water&#8221; in a decidedly euphemistic sense, let&#8217;s say.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-unite2\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite3\"><\/a><strong>3:<\/strong> &#8220;&#8230;or at least its marketing department&#8221;, as the usual caveat goes \u2014 including from me (e.g., footnote 1 in <a title=\"Beer Diary: The Moa IPO\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2012\/10\/13\/the-moa-ipo\/\" target=\"_blank\">my post on the IPO itself<\/a>). And while it is true that the beers range from <em>fine<\/em> to <a title=\"Diary II entry #111: Moa Imperial Stout\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/16\/moa-imperial-stout\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>great<\/em><\/a> and the brewer himself is indeed a lovely chap, there comes a point where something goes on long enough and everyone involved really is at least a little bit culpable by association.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-unite3\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite4\"><\/a><strong>4:<\/strong> Well, other than <a title=\"BrewsNews.com.au: 'Famous ex-cricketer rings bell to promote himself at beer festival'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brewsnews.com.au\/2014\/05\/famous-ex-cricketer-rings-bell-to-promote-himself-at-beer-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\">hiring Shane Warne to front their product in Australia<\/a>. Which makes little goddamn\u00a0sense for several reasons, not least of which the boofhead reputation he&#8217;s transparently struggling to shake. Against their otherwise softly-softly tactics of late, I&#8217;m pretty much at a loss to explain <em>that<\/em> one. Perhaps it&#8217;s a mistake to try to attribute a rationality behind it at all; it might just show\u00a0their instincts.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-unite4\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite5\"><\/a><strong>5:<\/strong> Just because someone will always come along and set a worse example, I suppose it&#8217;s at least a relief they aren&#8217;t just trying to obliviate their past misdeeds and erase them from the record (except for one example that we&#8217;ll get to later&#8230;) \u2014 unlike WilliamsWarn, whose <a title=\"Beer Diary Facebook Page: The WilliamsWarn &quot;Testicles&quot; ad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thebeerdiary\/photos\/a.465545366789735.112054.395399427137663\/840700415940893\/?type=1\" target=\"_blank\">foray into #everydaysexism was made all the sadder<\/a> for their reaction to criticism. <a href=\"#tag-unite5\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn6\"><\/a><strong>6:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Simplicter<\/em>. I was in the habit of saying &#8220;~ ally&#8221;, but I&#8217;ve <a title=\"35 Practical Steps Men Can Take to Support Feminism\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xojane.com\/issues\/feminism-men-practical-steps\" target=\"_blank\">lately been convinced otherwise<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag6\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-unite-a\"><\/a><strong>\u2020:<\/strong> Coincidentally, in the inadvertent extra delay in getting this online, the guys at the Ale Of A Time podcast uploaded an episode wherein <a title=\"Ale Of A Time 'sode 18: IPA, sexism, and no guest\" href=\"http:\/\/aleofatime.com\/2014\/08\/12\/podcast-sode-18-ipa-sexism-and-no-guest\/\" target=\"_blank\">they also address the sexist branding \/ beer-naming problem<\/a>.
