But it&#8217;s a Sunday, and they never feel like the occasion for such heavy-lifting \u2014 except perhaps in the garden \u2014 so I&#8217;ve instead happily been going through my pile of Interesting Miscellaneous Things To Read.<\/p>\n<p>Back when I was a paperboy, we relished January as a month of lighter-than-usual deliveries thanks to the end of holiday advertising a the general Slow News Month. In the beer world, at least, it seems there&#8217;s no such effect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"'Beer &amp; Biodiversity', by MinuteEarth, on YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Atg-5Nqszxw\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Beer &amp; Biodiversity<\/strong><\/a>: A wonderful little explanation of the parallels between not-usually-related complex fields. If you&#8217;re vaguely interested in one, it&#8217;ll help with the other; if, like me, you&#8217;re a big geek about both, it&#8217;s just gorgeous. Bonus marks for anyone who has noticed me banging on about &#8220;rich ecosystems&#8221; \u2014 of beers, of bars, and of festivals \u2014 of late. You are hereby forewarned that I intend to do it even more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzhistory.net.nz\/politics\/parliaments-people\/social-life\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bellamy&#8217;s and Parliament&#8217;s parties<\/strong><\/a>: It turns out that the\u00a0<em>very first thing<\/em> the New Zealand Parliament legislated on was its own access to alcohol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brewers who blog<\/strong>: Welcome back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamiltron.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greig Mcgill<\/a>\u00a0(of Brewaucracy) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luke.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Nicholas<\/a> (of Epic), both evidently resolved to return to the semi-regular-beer-writing fold for 2014. It&#8217;s possible that Contract Brewing is necessary for anyone have time for Consistent Blogging.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zx5FoDSc-0U\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>An overly-honest beer ad<\/strong><\/a>: In the fine tradition of slightly-unnerving satire.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/stoneandwood.com.au\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Stone &amp; Wood&#8217;s blog<\/strong><\/a>: I&#8217;ve mentioned my newfound gardening hobby \/ habit a few times before, and I must say that&#8217;s it&#8217;s been making me seriously crave their Garden Ale for extra beer-and-occasion matching. Their blog is a consistently enjoyable read, whether they&#8217;re rambling about <a href=\"http:\/\/stoneandwood.com.au\/2014\/01\/straight-brewers-mouth-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">the aforementioned deliciousness<\/a>, making <a href=\"http:\/\/stoneandwood.com.au\/2014\/01\/thinking-drinking\/\" target=\"_blank\">an excellent case for more-civilised drinking<\/a>,<a name=\"tag-sunday140202-1\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sunday140202-1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/stoneandwood.com.au\/2014\/01\/grateful-patience\/\" target=\"_blank\">apologising for being too damn popular<\/a>.<a name=\"tag-sunday140202-2\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sunday140202-2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/beerblog.genx40.com\/archive\/2014\/january\/howmuchisthat\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The extra value in &#8220;local&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>: (If any.) I&#8217;ve always enjoyed the inevitable slip into hypocrisy of anyone who, in their early days, heavily relies on geography in their &#8220;pitch&#8221; only to later realise they&#8217;d like to export and, you know, make some real money. Tuatara have swapped the &#8220;Brewed Locally&#8221; which once topped their labels for &#8220;Hand Crafted&#8221;, and Hamilton&#8217;s Good George is currently in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bettle.co.nz\/good-george\/\" target=\"_blank\">an amusing Billboard Spat<\/a> with Lion over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.campaignbrief.com\/nz\/2013\/05\/lions-waikato-draught-sets-the.html\" target=\"_blank\">ownership of the L word<\/a> which makes you wonder if they&#8217;ll never make liars of themselves (if regularly sending beer to Wellington doesn&#8217;t already count).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2014-01-14\/hallelujah-america-has-its-first-trappist-beer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>New American Trappists<\/strong><\/a>: With the opening of the surprisingly-mundanely-named Spencer brewery, it seems my <a title=\"Diary II entry #83: The Trappist Dance Card\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/29\/the-trappist-dance-card\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dance Card<\/a> is no longer complete \u2014 although, actually, I\u00a0<em>also<\/em> haven&#8217;t had any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trappist.be\/en\/pages\/trappist-beers\" target=\"_blank\">Mont des Cats or Engelszell<\/a>. (And somewhat fittingly, they had help in setting up from the above-mentioned Pretty Things brewery.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandatory Pete Brown<\/strong>: 1) <a title=\"'If you love craft beer, set it free'\" href=\"http:\/\/petebrown.blogspot.co.nz\/2014\/01\/if-you-love-craft-beer-set-it-free.html\" target=\"_blank\">On &#8220;craft beer&#8221;<\/a>, an excellent musical analogy,<a name=\"tag-sunday140202-3\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sunday140202-3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> and how\u00a0<em>honesty<\/em> and\u00a0<em>quality<\/em> are important. 2) Conclusions from his <a title=\"'Eleven Things I Learned This Dry January'\" href=\"http:\/\/petebrown.blogspot.co.nz\/2014\/01\/eleven-things-i-learned-this-dry-january.html\" target=\"_blank\">previously-here-referenced Dry January<\/a>. And 3) on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.londonlovesbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/browns-beer-why-expensive-beers-are-way-better-than-pricey-wines\/7332.article\" target=\"_blank\">the excellent value-for-money-ness<\/a> of beer. (But generally, just read Pete Brown.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCREpq9EjQRSjxKdj76nJBbg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Beer Pilgrim<\/strong><\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brewsnews.com.au\/2014\/01\/1788-meets-2014-with-the-creation-of-the-first-brew\/\" target=\"_blank\">This seems to be Lion-in-Australia&#8217;s version<\/a> of whatever it was that moved them to that <a title=\"'Made to Match'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/06\/02\/made-to-match\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Made To Match&#8217;<\/a> horribleness (albeit <em>way<\/em> better executed); an insufficiently-openly-branded parade of naff that will probably make you dumber by the minute. Another tragically wasted opportunity and failure of corporate courage.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/distractionsinspace.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>And finally, an irrelevancy<\/strong><\/a>: Because the space program is fucking amazing. We are particularly strange monkeys, sitting on the shoreline sharpening sticks and bashing rocks in <i>very specific ways<\/i> so we can build rockets to wander the universe in and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-25878051\" target=\"_blank\">robots to go out ahead of us<\/a>.
