While I did make sure to wear my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newint.com.au\/shop\/tshirt-no-co2-black-ff-10-12-3255.htm\" target=\"_blank\">super-smug cyclist t-shirt<\/a> when I picked it up, today,<a name=\"tag-radler1\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-radler1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><br \/>\nI&#8217;m no rabidly dogmatic anti-combustion-engine fanatic \u2014 but I really do suggest you strongly consider getting your own <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Velocipede\" target=\"_blank\">velocipede<\/a>, if you don&#8217;t already have one: it&#8217;s a nice mix of relaxed and efficient transport, with little traffic, no parking meters, and genuinely-therapeutic windows into the Zen Of Cycling \u2014 wherein you may come to believe that there seldom are hill climbs or headwinds so punishing that they&#8217;re ultimately unworthy of the blistering downhills or superpowering tailwinds that eventually follow.<a name=\"tag-radler2\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-radler2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And what better to celebrate with than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.germanbeerinstitute.com\/Radler.html\" target=\"_blank\">a\u00a0radler<\/a>?\u00a0An\u00a0<em>actual<\/em> radler, mind. Not that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monteiths.co.nz\/Beer-And-Cider\/Radler-bier\" target=\"_blank\">wrongly-named and more-wrongly-trademarked carbonated dishwashing liquid<\/a> that D.B. peddle, nor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dbexportbeer.co.nz\/Beer-Family.aspx#\/4\" target=\"_blank\">their new-and-differently-horrible &#8220;Export Citrus&#8221;<\/a> \u2014 which weirdly\u00a0<em>might<\/em> kinda count as more truly &#8220;radler-esque&#8221;, and which must have them laughing all the way to the bank given that they charge basically the same for something upon which they pay a fraction of the excise tax. No, this thing was actually pleasantly refreshing. I can imagine it&#8217;d go truly gangbusters on a hot day, especially after and\/or during a good non-commuter ride. There&#8217;s naught wrong with a well-made shandy \u2014 but therein lies the thing, doesn&#8217;t it? Waldhaus&#8217; version (not really surprisingly) manages it; being recognisably beery (albeit superfriendily and easily beery), with lemonade that avoids tasting\u00a0<em>fake<\/em>, candy-ish, and contrived as it too-often does.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s <a title=\"Search for &quot;Radler&quot;, on the Beer Diary\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/?s=radler\" target=\"_blank\">an often-mentioned <em>madness<\/em><\/a> that I technically shouldn&#8217;t have been allowed to buy that beer, here, thanks to an incredibly stupid quirk and\/or interpretation of the local law. There was recently <a href=\"http:\/\/praguemonitor.com\/2014\/01\/10\/heineken-brewer-loses-exclusivity-use-radler-term-czechrep\" target=\"_blank\">a knock-back on just this style term in the Czech Republic<\/a> for Heineken \u2014 which, at a high level of abstraction,\u00a0<em>is<\/em> D.B. \u2014 that deserves to be celebrated, but unfortunately doesn&#8217;t signal any kind of good news, here, given the vast differences in jurisdiction. There was a distinct element of protest and provocation when Hashigo Zake imported this,<a name=\"tag-radler3\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-radler3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0almost daring D.B. to send them <a title=\"'Cease and desist', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cease_and_desist\" target=\"_blank\">a lawyer&#8217;s letter<\/a> which they&#8217;d no doubt just frame and hang on the wall. Nothing ever came of it, but given the <a href=\"http:\/\/legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/acquiescence\" target=\"_blank\">long-running rule<\/a> that you risk losing trademarks you don&#8217;t actively defend, that might&#8217;ve been bad tactics on their part \u2014 and, just maybe, a brilliantly patient long-lead play by <a href=\"http:\/\/theliquorladder.blogspot.co.nz\/2011\/07\/open-letter-to-dominion-breweries.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dominic<\/a>. Radlergate gave context to <a title=\"'Porter Noir'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2012\/07\/26\/porter-noir\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Porter Noir Saga<\/a> which came and went relatively quickly, but maybe there&#8217;s life left in the former fiasco yet. Hopefully it&#8217;s sensibly solved by the time I&#8217;m shopping for my\u00a0<em>next<\/em> new bike, at least.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-radler1\"><\/a><strong>1:<\/strong> Even though I want to quibble with it, <em>myself<\/em>; there&#8217;s a good deal of CO<sub>2<\/sub> involved in making a bike and getting it to me. But still. &#8220;Vanishingly little CO<sub>2<\/sub>, in comparison&#8221; doesn&#8217;t really make a good slogan.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-radler1\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-radler2\"><\/a><strong>2:<\/strong> Remember I say these things about hills and winds <em><a title=\"'Get your hand off it, Wellington'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/12\/19\/10-breweries-in-wellington\/\" target=\"_blank\">as a Wellingtonian<\/a><\/em>. And while it&#8217;s maybe a trite example \u2014 but perhaps a decent-enough slogan (see above, n1) \u2014 it really might do your mental health a lot of good. It did mine.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-radler2\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-radler3\"><\/a><strong>3:<\/strong> Their distribution arm has since spun off and transmogrified into <a href=\"http:\/\/beerwithoutborders.co.nz\/our-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Beers Without Borders<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-radler3\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My big present-to-self this year, after several years on a semi-dependable runabout that has massively improved my daily \/ weekly \/ seasonal routine, is a nice new bike.
