It&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>quite<\/em> Sunday, and <a title=\"Beer Diary: Interesting Finds\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/category\/interesting-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">these posts<\/a> don&#8217;t even remotely form any kind of pattern in time. Such is life, I suppose. Productivity goes all over the place when you get a) really busy, then b) a complete break from being busy at all. Drifting slowly closer to Normality once again \u2014 strictly in the timetable-statistics sense, mind you \u2014 I&#8217;m inclined to have another go at beneficial-habit-forming.<a name=\"tag-someday1\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> And besides, just as your holidays are not everyone&#8217;s holidays,<a name=\"tag-someday2\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> your Day Of Rest \u2014 and thereby your catch-up-on-reading-stuff time \u2014 isn&#8217;t necessarily a Sunday according to the calendar. (Apparently, University mostly taught me how to rationalise missed deadlines.)<a name=\"tag-someday3\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Anyway<\/em>, I was privileged enough to have a decent-length summer holiday in which I caught up on a metric butt-tonne of (non-beer-related) reading. And so now, in the interests both of spreading the love and of assisting in everyone&#8217;s valuable procrastination, here follows an eclectic collection of (beer-related) Things To Read I&#8217;ve stumbled upon recently. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"'What's in my beer?', on the Beerhive Blog, stuff.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/dominion-post\/capital-life\/the-beerhive\/9547443\/Whats-in-my-beer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Beer money:<\/strong><\/a> Stu McKinlay \u2014 Yeastie Boy and\u00a0<a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s03e06\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/11\/24\/s03e06-stu-mckinlay\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>friend of the show<\/em><\/a> \u2014 recently wrote a wonderful piece for the local paper&#8217;s beer blog, breaking down the cost of his products. It&#8217;s a nice antidote to the all-too-frequent whinge about the price of a pint when beer is actually the most ludicrously value-for-money luxury consumption good I can think of. Stu and I agree completely about\u00a0<em>that<\/em>,<a name=\"tag-someday4\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> and his before-the-beer-goes-in breakdown of costs is a large part of his rejoinder to my complaints of origin-fudging in labelling.<a name=\"tag-someday5\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> (He&#8217;s also bang on with <a href=\"http:\/\/thebeermoneyblog.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">his own recommended reading<\/a> \/ inspiration at the end, there.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-essex-25594482\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BrewDog burglary:<\/strong><\/a> Despite the above-mentioned affordability of beer, it seems we&#8217;ve &#8220;matured&#8221; (which almost certainly isn&#8217;t the right word) where apparent thefts-to-order of particular bottles are now occurring. Naturally, I&#8217;m obligated to wonder if they perhaps orchestrated the heist themselves, just for the headlines. <a href=\"http:\/\/thebeerboy.blogspot.co.nz\/2010\/07\/brewdog-are-dead-long-live-brewdog_26.html\" target=\"_blank\">Given other antics<\/a>, you couldn&#8217;t really put it past them, any more&#8230; The perils of stunt marketing, I suppose.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"the-sub.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sub.com\/global\/Sections\/Explore\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Sub:<\/strong><\/a> The website for Heineken(etc.)&#8217;s in-fridge keg system, similar to Lion&#8217;s &#8216;Tap King&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brewsnews.com.au\/2013\/06\/brewer-sparks-a-royal-revolution-for-australian-beer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">which recently debuted in Australia<\/a>. It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how these things pan out in the wild, but for now just look at the\u00a0<em>wank<\/em> with which it&#8217;s presented. Yeesh. And for\u00a0<em>next<\/em>, let&#8217;s wonder about whether some cleverness and some 3D-printed parts might make them universalisable for dispensing flagons of\u00a0<em>better<\/em> beer&#8230; (Thanks, of a sort, to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AleOfATime\/status\/396798818760392704\" target=\"_blank\">Luke<\/a> \u2014 who has recently joined <a href=\"http:\/\/aleofatime.com\/category\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Podcasters&#8217; Guild<\/a> \u2014 for the link.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breweryhistory.com\/journal\/archive\/139\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Proper history:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<em>Brewery History<\/em>, the journal of the (UK) Brewery History Society, operates a neat model whereby the full text of issues becomes freely available once the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breweryhistory.com\/journal\/archive\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">content hits its second birthday<\/a>. The most-recent to be so revealed is their special edition dedicated to the life and work of Michael Jackson (you know, <a title=\"'Michael Jackson (writer)', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Jackson_(writer)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>the other one<\/em><\/a>), and it looks like a cracker. I&#8217;m ordering a printed copy, after just scratching the surface of the text online. (Massive thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/southstarbrew\/status\/420266420732047361\" target=\"_blank\">Kieran<\/a> for the pointer.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.co.nz\/books\/mccashins\/the-mccashins-story-9781775534655.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Probably somewhat revisionist history:<\/strong><\/a> <em>The McCashin&#8217;s Story<\/em> is out, and I&#8217;m yet to grab \/ find \/ borrow a copy for a proper read \u2014 but colour me skeptical. The surtitle is transparent nonsense, whatever your personal definition of &#8220;craft&#8221;, and the smell of myth-making is strong \u2014 compounded by the (very gentle) interview Terry McCashin had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/audio\/player\/2575826\" target=\"_blank\">on Radio New Zealand<\/a>. Theirs is only a &#8220;David &amp; Goliath&#8221; story if David later entered into an, er, money-for-physical-company arrangement with the giant. So to speak. They talk up an &#8220;#8 wire mentality&#8221; after buying an existing brewery, they deride beers &#8216;notable only for what they lacked&#8217; while peddling\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2012\/07\/10\/hofbrau-maibock-reinheitsgebot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reinheitsgebotty nonsense<\/a>, and credit themselves with giving Lion its first &#8220;lager with legs&#8221; presumably never having stumbled upon Steinlager. (That said, I <em>did<\/em> enjoy two of their \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/nelson-mail\/features\/lifestyle\/fritz-and-marias-beer-column\/9458845\/Stoke-Recognition-range-and-the-McCashin-story\" target=\"_blank\">Recognition Series<\/a>\u2019\u00a0beers while writing this up \u2014 and re-watching Harry Potter.)<a name=\"tag-someday6\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday6\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/dominion-post\/capital-life\/restaurant-reviews\/9574301\/Dive-in-to-Little-Portland\" target=\"_blank\">Local reportage:<\/a><\/strong> A perfectly nice write-up \u2014 of my <em>de facto<\/em> new &#8216;local&#8217; and its environs \u2014\u00a0by profoundly hit-and-miss critic David Burton, which slips into oddness when it insists that the area has a nickname it&#8217;s never had.<a name=\"tag-someday7\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-someday7\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> Best anyone can tell, it was suggested\u00a0<em>once<\/em>, in sarcastic jest, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/badtom\/status\/410259817714814976\" target=\"_blank\">on Twitter<\/a>, and hasn&#8217;t ever been used earnestly. A timely reminder that you should always be wary, when reading reviews from abroad: too many writers just can&#8217;t help themselves from making up little details to make them seem <a href=\"http:\/\/games.usvsth3m.com\/down-with-the-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">down with the kids<\/a>. There&#8217;s a need for a general raising of the collective eyebrow given the quality of some stuff out there, and I&#8217;ve been meaning to get into that for a while \u2014 he says, casting a sideways glance his copies of the industry rag\u00a0<em>DrinksBiz<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/petebrown.blogspot.co.nz\/2014\/01\/dry-january.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dry January, defended:<\/a><\/strong> I couldn&#8217;t be more on Pete Brown&#8217;s side on this, even though I don&#8217;t share in his yearly ritual (or anything like it). I&#8217;ve struck my own balance with the chemical realities of beer and the many ways it&#8217;s involved in my life \u2014 and no longer working nights in a bar and becoming a daily commuter cyclist have definitely helped \u2014 and do think it&#8217;s important that everyone find their own way to do the same, and to keep checking in with themselves whether its working. Just don&#8217;t dismiss people who do things differently; they each might find different balances and particular patterns that work. In extremis, they might give it up entirely. And on\u00a0<em>that<\/em>, read <a href=\"http:\/\/thewireless.co.nz\/themes\/excess\/cutting-back\" target=\"_blank\">this incredibly brave piece by Jackson Wood<\/a>\u00a0and \u2014 as always \u2014 don&#8217;t be a dick.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/blogs\/2013\/11\/neville-longbottom-is-the-most-important-person-in-harry-potter\" target=\"_blank\">And finally, an irrelevancy.<\/a><\/strong> Because you really should consider re-watching and\/or re-reading Harry \u2014 not <em>just<\/em> because Neville Longbottom is super bad-ass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left; I&#8217;m always torn between wanting to join in the hoots of derision for the cycles of failure that most New Year&#8217;s Resolutions orbit within, and having to admit that it is indeed an excellent time of year for clean-outs and rearrangements both external and internal.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-someday1\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-someday2\"><\/a><strong>2:<\/strong> As a long-serving hospitality worker, I really hope everyone does remember to keep this in mind, each year. But you, dear readers, are Civilised Folk and treat service staff properly at all times, right? Excellent.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-someday2\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-someday3\"><\/a><strong>3:<\/strong> Lines from the much-mourned Douglas keep coming to mind, lately: &#8220;Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.&#8221; and &#8220;I love deadlines.
