Still not a word of complaint, though \u2014 but equally few hacked out to put up <em>here<\/em>. And so a public holiday to the rescue, delivering a three-day weekend by way of a Day Of Rest in commemoration of a nice idea that&#8217;s forever been tricky to actually apply. With some a couple of alarm-free mornings,<a name=\"tag-sabbath1\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sabbath1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <em>just<\/em> the right amount of domestic productivity, and a lovely little beer festival, it was a cracker of a super-sized weekend and today has a very suitable\u00a0<em>Sunday<\/em>\u00a0feeling to it.<\/p>\n<p>Which, naturally, puts me in mind of the &#8216;tradition&#8217; I keep trying to make more\u00a0<em>traditional<\/em>. And so, with all the best intentions to do this \u2014 as well as <em>everything else<\/em> \u2014 more often, I present for your perusal<a name=\"tag-sabbath2\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sabbath2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> a few choice tidbits:<a name=\"tag-sabbath3\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sabbath3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brewsnews.com.au\/2013\/10\/capital-brews\/\" target=\"_blank\">A history of Canberra brewing<\/a><\/strong>. I have a real soft spot for Australia&#8217;s deeply-odd little capital \u2014 I lived there for a while and had truly formative Beer Geek Moments at the marvellous Wig &amp; Pen \u2014 and was delighted to find an apparently-exhaustive history of the beer business in town. Visit the Wig while it lasts, and immediately check out whatever Richard Watkins gets up to next.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/beervana.blogspot.ca\/2013\/10\/a-better-history-of-american-ipa.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>A sobering longer-view look at the history of American IPA<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 and of beer in general, while they&#8217;re at it. I&#8217;m not sure I\u00a0<em>entirely<\/em> agree, but I&#8217;m much more <em>there<\/em> than not; we&#8217;ve been doing this for a\u00a0<em>long<\/em> time, as a species, and it does sometimes pay to do a little internal check-sum on whether you&#8217;re losing proper sense of scale in time and place.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-15265317\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The effects of alcohol might not be quite what you think they are<\/strong><\/a>.<a name=\"tag-sabbath4\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sabbath4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> Two years old, now, but this article was returned to my attention just when I was posting our <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/10\/26\/beer-diary-podcast-s03e05\/\" target=\"_blank\">liquor-law-freakout podcast ponderings<\/a>. From my perspective as a former bartender, at least, it was summed up best by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peetiepete\" target=\"_blank\">a friend and former colleague<\/a>: no one is genuinely different when they&#8217;re drunk, they&#8217;re just\u00a0<em>more<\/em>. If you&#8217;re a dick when you&#8217;ve had too much to drink, you might just actually be a dick.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegehumor.com\/article\/6921709\/the-complete-guide-to-the-craft-beer-at-your-local-bar\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>An uncomfortably close satire of beer-bar offerings<\/strong><\/a>. The stout looks good.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/popchartlab.com\/collections\/prints\/products\/the-magnificent-multitude-of-beer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>This lauded (and recently revised) chart<\/strong><\/a>, which has (if you ask me) almost jumped the shark into an unreadable mess with its looping glassware-suggestion arcs and the largely-useless-for-non-Americans brand tokens for each type. Paging <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Tufte\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tufte<\/a>. (But full marks for the lower-left&#8217;s Spaghetti Junction which consigns a few deserving candidates to being drunk from the can, 40<em>oz<\/em>, or Solo Cup.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeerboy.blogspot.com\/2013\/10\/portrait-of-brewer-eye-for-detail.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>A much more sedate Brewer Portait than usual<\/strong><\/a>, enjoyable not just for his delightfully soothing travelling-Canadian accent. Nicely personal and engaging.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/tv\/programs\/gruen-planet\/#episode\/LE1240H007S00\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The (bloody-marvellous)\u00a0<em>Gruen Planet<\/em>\u00a0team talked beer<\/strong><\/a>, for the first major section of last week&#8217;s show. Interesting to see things from a marketer&#8217;s perspective; even though they&#8217;re not dogmatically pro-&#8220;craft&#8221;, they&#8217;re still anti-crap \u2014 whether the crap in question is outright lies, or just boringness. (They&#8217;ve also reminded me that I really, really want to hack the Tap King into a general-purpose flagon-dispensing gadget.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/trackyourbud.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TrackYourBud.com<\/strong><\/a>,<a name=\"tag-sabbath5\"><\/a><a href=\"#fn-sabbath5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> where you can learn \u2014 to use the word\u00a0<em>quite<\/em> wrongly \u2014 that rice is an extravagantly expensive ingredient that other breweries don&#8217;t love you enough to us (and definitely\u00a0<em>not<\/em> a cost-cutting blandifier), that &#8220;ageing&#8221; a beer can be measured in mere\u00a0<em>days<\/em> (not silly old-fashioned months or years), and that Budweiser can still apparently say (with a straight face and without being fined and\/or sued into oblivion) that &#8220;no other beer takes as long to make&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/zoomquilt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>And finally, an irrelevancy<\/strong><\/a>, because it&#8217;s nice to be reminded that the &#8220;new&#8221; things \u2014 be they comic books, videogames, digital art, or whatever \u2014 aren&#8217;t necessarily just vaguely-modified and somehow-weaker instances of &#8220;real&#8221; culture; they can be totally and amazingly\u00a0<em>themselves<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-sabbath1\"><\/a><strong>1:<\/strong> <em>Sleeps-in<\/em>, as I like to call them, ever the fan of a French-style front-loaded plural. On Saturday, my first un-buzz-assisted waking-up in weeks, I actually managed to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u5CVsCnxyXg\" target=\"_blank\">a surpassingly suitable song<\/a> lodged in my brain the second I was conscious.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-sabbath1\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-sabbath2\"><\/a><strong>2:<\/strong> In either the original sense of &#8220;to read with careful attention&#8221; <em>or<\/em> the more-modern usage of &#8220;to skim, hoping to vaguely extract the gist&#8221;; language evolves in wonderful, liberating and contradictory ways.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-sabbath2\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-sabbath3\"><\/a><strong>3:<\/strong> Which admittedly do require a more expansive, cultural-studies-esque definition of &#8220;reading&#8221;, since two of them are videos, one is a (dis?)infographic, and one an interactive webmonstrosity.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-sabbath3\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-sabbath4\"><\/a><strong>4:<\/strong> Or rather, given the mechanics of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Placebo\" target=\"_blank\">Placebo Effect<\/a>, they might be mostly exactly what you think they are.
