This happens to us, sometimes. George has been abnormally busy, post-holiday \u2014 though often with new-puppy-related duties about which he&#8217;s not remotely about to complain \u2014 and I was diverted, in the actual around-Beervana-itself days, by ingloriously falling off my bike.<a href=\"#fn-s03e04-1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-s03e04-1\"><\/a> But <em>at last<\/em>, we&#8217;re back. Much (though by no means all) of the conversation was looking-ahead to events now past, but we&#8217;re presenting them here mostly unvarnished and uncorrected so you can test how prescient and\/or very-very-wrong we were. By &#8216;New Yorker poster&#8217;, I mean the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/View_of_the_World_from_9th_Avenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">View of the World from 9th Avenue<\/a>.<\/em> I saw re-launched cans of Leigh Sawmill at Beervana, and spied the re-branded Harrington&#8217;s bottles in the supermarket (beside the\u00a0<em>old<\/em> ones, which now rank highly on the list of Starkest Contrasts, Ever), but am still eagerly awaiting a Hot Water Brewing can (but he <em>is<\/em> brewing, now). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohbeautifulbeer.com\/2012\/07\/churchkey-can-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Churchkey is\u00a0<em>so fucking hipster<\/em><\/a>, but also utterly, utterly gorgeous (but is from the US, not the UK). I had great fun with <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/04\/15\/maui-coconut-porter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maui&#8217;s porter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/04\/18\/maui-big-swell-ipa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IPA<\/a>. The Monteith&#8217;s black bottle, I must admit, looked really cool \u2014 but <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/05\/13\/monteiths-single-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they couldn&#8217;t non-absurdly promote it, given their premise<\/a>\u00a0(a point to which we return). <em>Meanwhile<\/em>, Mumbo Jumbo turns out to be pants.<\/li>\n<li>(10.10) George is keen to point out \u2014 after near-interminable school-age forced re-watchings of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YqY-qWw7xhQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Hypothermia: Such a Stupid Way to Die<\/em><\/a> \u2014 that you&#8217;re not supposed to take alcohol camping. &lt;\/<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_service_announcement\">PSA<\/a>&gt;<\/li>\n<li>(12.30) <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/04\/15\/maui-coconut-porter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There is only one\u00a0<em>i<\/em> in Aluminum<\/a>\u00a0(see footnote 3).<\/li>\n<li>(13.00) My BrewDog \/ Boundary Road (\/ Batman reference) rant is <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/07\/02\/brewdog-boundary-road-and-becoming-the-villain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, if you need it.<\/li>\n<li>(15.00)\u00a0<strong>Beer of the Week #2: Townshend &#8216;Last of the Summer Ale&#8217;<\/strong>; ESB, but weirdified, and in a much-sexier new bottle, speaking of\u00a0<strong>judging a beer by its label<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>(22.30)\u00a0<strong>Outmoded previews<\/strong>, for the West Coast IPA Challenge and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00ac<\/a>Matariki. My post-match for the latter should be up later this week, just to pile on the skewed timing.<\/li>\n<li>(24.50)\u00a0<strong>pre-<\/strong><strong>Beervana<\/strong> speculation, including the Lion sponsorship announcement and the tricky issue of disclosure. I&#8217;ll have to have my full-on debrief very soon, but it&#8217;s going to be a doozy&#8230;\u00a0<strong>Choice Beer Week<\/strong> also felt happily felt like more of &#8220;a thing&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>(29.00) <strong>Beer documentaries<\/strong> (which the a certain part of my brain <em>really<\/em> wants to call &#8220;malty-media&#8221;). Hashigo actually showed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beerhuntermovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new\u00a0<em>Beer Hunter<\/em> film<\/a>, rather than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8jb0gnnDJnM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the original TV series<\/a>. Both are totally worthy of your time, though the great modern nonfiction beer epic is still waiting to be made:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/beerwarsmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beer Wars<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/beertickersfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beertickers<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>are both seriously flawed <em>and<\/em> recommended viewing. But seriously,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bj1r6u8zLPo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Scratch<\/em><\/a> shows how the &#8216;sub-culture&#8217; genre is done (though\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_King_of_Kong:_A_Fistful_of_Quarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King of Kong<\/a><\/em> is a contender for runner-up, too, though with a conflict \u2014 rather than history and\/or overview \u2014 focus).<\/li>\n<li>(36.40)\u00a0<strong>Beer of the Week #3: Emerson&#8217;s &#8216;Deafinition&#8217; Old Ale<\/strong>. Which is <em>utterly<\/em> pun-tastic and gorgeous and fun and goes a\u00a0<em>long<\/em> way towards allaying the fears \/ quiet bits of reserve \/ healthy skepticism expressed in <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/02\/28\/the-lost-podcast-archive-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the post-buyout podcast episode<\/a>, unless it&#8217;s all a double-bluff. (The wire cage, by the way, is apparently a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muselet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>muselet<\/em><\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>(49.20) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?v=171673229671982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Boundary Road&#8217;s &#8216;Blind Taste Test&#8217;<\/strong><\/a>, just to depress myself again, since looking back at the can unexpectedly reminded me. Sexy\u00a0<em>need not<\/em> be sexist.<\/li>\n<li>(51.20)\u00a0<strong>Recommendations:<\/strong> <strong>Croucher Ethiopean Coffee Stout<\/strong> (at Hop Garden, or indeed anywhere else), and\u00a0<strong>Schipper&#8217;s &#8216;Scallywag&#8217;<\/strong> (likewise), which puts George in mind of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mnmiwo79aTg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Peabody&#8217;s Improbable History<\/em><\/a>. <strong>Tuatara &#8216;Blacklight&#8217;<\/strong>, the only fault in which is the boozier-than-is-evident punch \u2014 and the UV-reference isn&#8217;t obvious enough to count as a warning.\u00a0<strong>Liberty &#8216;Darkest Day&#8217;<\/strong>, as well, and <strong>ParrotDog &#8216;Otis&#8217;<\/strong> since I bloody loves oatmeal stout, I do \u2014 #oatsforawesome!\u00a0<strong>Garage Project L&#8217;il Red Rye<\/strong> gets the non-conflicted nod from George, too (but is all gone, sorry).<\/li>\n<li>(1.02.20)\u00a0<strong>On the Beer List<\/strong> \u2014 ironically, as it turns out \u2014\u00a0<strong>Tom Scott<\/strong>. Not <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Scott_(cartoonist)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the local one<\/a>, the London one; who is on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/enyay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the YouTube<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomscott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Twitters<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomscott.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the General Internets<\/a>. George loaded up a bottle of Yeastie Boys &#8216;Digital IPA&#8217; (which felt appropriate) into his luggage, and I emailed Tom to tell him it was on its way if he would like a beer from the Antipodes. He seemed genuinely chuffed, but it turns out he doesn&#8217;t drink. So the Beer List&#8217;s streak of Incompletes continues \u2014 and if anyone else finds themselves in a position to buy Tom something\u00a0<em>else<\/em> as a replacement, please do so on my behalf; he&#8217;s more than earned it.
