The idea is simple: imagine yourself cast-away on a remote but pleasantly habitable island. What records would you wish were there with you? What would you summon to keep you company, if you could? Pausing to take stock of enduring favourites is a genuinely worthy meditative experience \u2014 especially with a memory like mine.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Desert Island\u00a0<em>Beers<\/em> is an ongoing project run in collaboration between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allgatesbrewery.com\/allgates-brewery-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Gates Brewery&#8217;s blog<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/real-ale-reviews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Real Ale Reviews<\/a>. Recently, they embarked on a bit of an Australasian Excursion, inviting a bunch of Antipodeans to participate and ponder what they&#8217;d want to have with them on their hypothetical island. I was chuffed<sup>4<\/sup> to be asked to join in, and spent an enjoyable evening at the Malthouse, perched on the bar with laptop and beer(s), flicking through my\u00a0<em>Diary<\/em> and contemplating my options.<\/p>\n<p>In no particular order \u2014 by which I mean to say this isn&#8217;t a ranking or a table of medals, this is just the sequence in which I put them on the list \u2014 my Desert Island Beers were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/01\/26\/little-creatures-pale-ale-on-australia-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Creatures Pale Ale<\/a> (my Fallout Boy)<sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/11\/18\/hallertau-minimus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hallertau &#8216;Minimus&#8217;<\/a> (for sessionable loveliness)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/20\/liberty-never-go-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberty &#8216;Never Go Back&#8217;<\/a> (a mandatory B.A.M.F.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/29\/the-trappist-dance-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochefort 6 \/ 8 \/ 10<\/a> (a Big Belgian Trappist Thing)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2012\/06\/30\/yeastie-boys-gunnamatta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yeastie Boys &#8216;Gunnamatta&#8217; Earl Grey IPA<\/a> (as my &#8220;weird&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allgatesbrewery.com\/desert-island-beers-phil-cook-new-zealand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full write-up went up on the All Gates Brewery website<\/a> over the weekend \u2014 my phone beeped and notified me as I arrived at Gunnamatta beach, as featured in the above photo, fittingly enough \u2014 and includes elaborated reasons for picking each of the above, as well as my attempts to choose books, an album, a meal, and a luxury item to take in addition to all that lovely beer. It was heaps of fun to participate, and reading around the other entries is a great little window into the personalities of other &#8216;beer people&#8217; that you might not otherwise hear a lot from; To compound the matching (and to atone for being in the wrong\u00a0<em>state<\/em>, perhaps), we were listening <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1W3ji5Yi3IQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to the song<\/a>, at least.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>2:<\/strong> The Beeb&#8217;s website isn&#8217;t massively helpful \u2014 for slaves-to-copyright reasons \u2014 to those of us in further-flung parts of the world. But there&#8217;s a rumour, you know, that, apparently, I hear, you can download these things through, um, unofficial channels.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>3:<\/strong>\u00a0In both the book\u00a0<em>and<\/em> the film;\u00a0<em>H.F.<\/em> is a very-rare instance of a page-to-screen adaptation that works brilliantly well, if you ask me \u2014 especially considering that the latter translated the story forward in time and to another continent. <a title=\"'High Fidelity (novel)', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_Fidelity_(novel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wikipedia page for the novel<\/a> \u2014 in true fantastically-geeky style \u2014 includes the lists, if you&#8217;re impatiently curious.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>4:<\/strong>\u00a0Which felt suitably British.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>5:<\/strong> <em>Not<\/em>, I hasten to emphasise, my <a title=\"'Fall Out Boy', on Wikipedia (warning: contains crapness)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_Out_Boy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fall Out Boy<\/a>.
