George is planning on buying a neat little portable DAT-thingy, so hopefully we&#8217;ll be &#8216;on location&#8217; more often.<\/li>\n<li>(1.20) <strong>Beer of the Week #1: Rogue &#8216;Brutal IPA&#8217;<\/strong>, bought at <a title=\"New World Thornon on CraftBeerCapital.com\" href=\"http:\/\/craftbeercapital.com\/profiles\/?name=nwthorndon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New World Thorndon<\/a>, who really have been massively upping their already-rather-good beer game lately.<\/li>\n<li>(4.00) &#8220;No Beer Before Yeast&#8221; does sound like a sensible maxim, but last I heard the beer <em>was<\/em>\u00a0in okay shape, despite our recklessness. Mike said it was ticking along happily, and should be fit for sampling soon.<\/li>\n<li>(11.20) I do keep referencing Liberty&#8217;s Imperial oatmeal stout, &#8216;Never Go Back&#8217;; I&#8217;ve done it twice already in ten minutes, and I often mention it in recommendations here and elsewhere.<a title=\"Diary II entry #113: Liberty 'Never Go Back'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/20\/liberty-never-go-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> If I need to underscore the point further: have some<\/a>. It&#8217;s amazing.<\/li>\n<li>(12.30) &#8216;Darkest Day&#8217; doesn&#8217;t seem to&#8217;ve made it into my <em>Diary<\/em>, which is damn-near inexcusable. It was much lighter than the above-mentioned &#8216;NGB&#8217;, but that just made it <em>stupidly<\/em>\u00a0drinkable (as opposed to <em>worryingly<\/em>\u00a0so).<\/li>\n<li>(12.40) Liberty&#8217;s &#8216;West Coast Blonde&#8217; series got a special mention \u2014 under Best Experimentation \u2014 in our <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e09: 2011 Year in Review\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/27\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011 Year in Review episode<\/a>, and <a title=\"Diary II entry #66: Liberty Brewing 'West Coast Blonde: Amarillo'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/02\/26\/liberty-brewing-west-coast-blonde-amarillo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Amarillo-hopped edition was the first Liberty beer to make it into my <em>Diary<\/em><\/a>. And the series-concluding\u00a0<a title=\"Diary II entry #28: Mikkeller 10\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/10\/23\/mikkeller-%E2%80%9810%E2%80%99\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201810\u2019 IPA from Mikkeller was in the book a little-way before <em>that<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(16.20) Jo definitely has a love-hate (or hate-hate) relationship with C!tra. George, on the other hand, named it his Favourite Beer of 2011 \u2014 and it was a Beer of the Week for <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e08: Strong Beer\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/27\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the previous episode on Strong Beer<\/a>\u00a0(fittingly enough).<\/li>\n<li>(20.40) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P5kXT6Fjv0s&amp;sns=tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The secret to Liberty being able to offer free milling: Child Labour<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(20.50) <strong>Beer of the Week #2: Raindogs &#8216;Deadwood IPA&#8217;.\u00a0<\/strong>The vexed question of <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e01: Gray Market Imports\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/31\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gray Market Imports<\/a> was our first-ever podcast topic, but Mike&#8217;s point is even prior to <em>that<\/em>: there&#8217;s often not a <em>reason<\/em>\u00a0to go looking for imports \u2014 <a title=\"Diary II entry #110: I\/IPA Workshop\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/05\/iipa-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the local scene can keep you going longer than you might think<\/a>. &#8220;Imported&#8221; doesn&#8217;t <em>equal<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;fancy and worthy&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>(24.50) I have <em>no idea<\/em>\u00a0why brewers talk in terms of &#8220;hectolitres&#8221; \u2014 <em>one hundred litres<\/em>, for those of you who have forgotten your <a title=\"'Metrix prefix', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metric_prefix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more-obscure metric prefices<\/a> \u2014\u00a0other than it making for manageably-nice round numbers when talking about most kit sizes.<\/li>\n<li>(27.20) Welcome to the World, GoldenDog. You&#8217;re in good company, with: Golden Bear, Golden Eagle, ParrotDog, Black Dog, Raindogs\u2026<\/li>\n<li>(30.20) <strong>Great big name drop: Barry Hannah<\/strong>, who does the design work for Liberty and can be found <a title=\"@barryhannah, on Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/barryhannah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the Twitters<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tailor.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the Intermanets<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(31.00) My notes from last year&#8217;s IPA Challenge are almost entirely absent, owing to my being struck-down with a particularly-bad Man Flu and propped up by the dregs of Wellington&#8217;s last legal supplies of blessed pseudoephedrine. George and I hope to be at this year&#8217;s edition, recording-gizmo in hand.<\/li>\n<li>(32.20) I should add, on the mention of my friend and former colleague Jono Galuszka, that <a title=\"From Drinker to Brewer\" href=\"http:\/\/fromdrinkertobrewer.blogspot.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he&#8217;s re-taken-up the blogging<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(32.50) <strong>Recommendations:\u00a0Brewaucracy \/ Three Boys new session beers.<\/strong>\u00a0Inbetween recording and notesing, we did have a chance to try the Three Boys release, and it was <em>exactly<\/em>\u00a0what I wanted; allow me (as if you have a choice) to upgrade it to Highly Recommended. And if Jo ever re-brews <a title=\"Diary II entry #114: Liberty 'Taranaki Session Beer'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/21\/liberty-taranaki-session-beer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taranaki Session Beer<\/a>, get some.<\/li>\n<li>(38.30) <strong>Jo&#8217;s perfect pints: Westvleteren 12 and Russian River &#8216;Pliny the Elder&#8217;<\/strong>, I&#8217;ve had both \u2014 <a title=\"Diary II entry #83: The Trappist Dance Card\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/29\/the-trappist-dance-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I loved the former<\/a>, and was <a title=\"Diary II entry #110: I\/IPA Workshop\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/05\/iipa-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certainly impressed by the other<\/a>, but thought it was more &#8220;lovely&#8221; than &#8220;legendary&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>(41.15) <strong>Beer of the Week #3: <a title=\"Diary II entry #113: Liberty 'Never Go Back'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/20\/liberty-never-go-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberty &#8216;Never Go Back&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>(47.20) <strong>Jo&#8217;s\u00a0Recommendations: Epic, especially &#8216;Armageddon&#8217; and Pale Ale<\/strong>. The years-old, game-changing Epic Pale Ale is <em>totally<\/em>\u00a0worth another look. I&#8217;ve had heaps of fun with it, too \u2014 and <a href=\"http:\/\/epicbeer.com\/blog\/2012\/1\/19\/reboot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the &#8216;Reboot&#8217; write-up<\/a> deserves a read.<\/li>\n<li>(50.50) &#8216;The Thing in the Sunday Star Times&#8217; George refers to was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/sunday-star-times\/latest-edition\/6953048\/Ale-and-hearty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an excellent recent piece by Michael Donaldson<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(51.30) <strong>Mike&#8217;s Recommendations: &#8216;Armageddon&#8217;, which prompts Jo (and me) to add: Tuatara Pilsner<\/strong>, especially since <em>its<\/em>\u00a0&#8216;reboot&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>(54.30) Jo and Mike both quickly start throwing large molecule names around when they&#8217;re talking about brewing&#8217;s minute details. Given their comfort and enthusiasm with them, it just makes me want to learn more chemistry.<\/li>\n<li>(59.30) George&#8217;s memory is spot on: Alice Galletly <em>did<\/em>\u00a0call Jo the &#8220;darling of the craft beer scene&#8221;, in <a title=\"'Galbraith's feat. Jo Wood', on Beer for a Year\" href=\"http:\/\/beerforayear.wordpress.com\/2012\/05\/16\/270-galbraiths-feat-joe-wood-yakima-monster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her write-up on the Cask Yakima Monster launch at Galbraith&#8217;s<\/a>, fittingly-enough. I (typically) haven&#8217;t <em>quite<\/em>\u00a0gotten around to posting my notes from the pint I had at Hashigo, but I totally agree with her praise for it.<\/li>\n<li>(1.00.30) <strong>George&#8217;s Recommendation: Yeastie Boys &#8216;Pot Kettle Black&#8217;<\/strong>, which he made with pretty spectacular timing, given that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/marlborough-express\/lifestyle\/beer\/7100276\/Yeasties-brews-prove-judges-cup-of-tea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dear old PKB just picked up the Champion Beer gong at the Asia Beer Awards in Singapore<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(1.01.05)\u00a0Cue the music:\u00a0<a title=\"'SPLIT!'
