festival in the still-empty ParrotDog brewery.\u00a0We take the chance to catch up a little on the Australian scene, and also celebrate the return of fresh-hop beers, the prospect of new employment (for me, and a certain someone else), offer a few recommendations &#8212; They don&#8217;t shy away from the fact that their owners are their owners, which &#8212; coupled with their <em>name<\/em>, and the &#8220;brand story&#8221; for Boundary Road &#8212; amounts to a masterclass in suppressing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognitive_dissonance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cognitive Dissonance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(4.30) If you did need more, my fuller rant on Boundary Road is a few pages back in the <em>Diary<\/em>, reporting from back in time when we did <a title=\"Diary II entry #117: The 'Chosen One' Choosing\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2012\/05\/07\/the-chosen-one-choosing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a &#8216;Chosen One&#8217; blind(ish) tasting<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(5.40) Post-GABS, allow me to put <em>even heavier emphasis<\/em>\u00a0on that &#8220;maybe&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>(8.30) KeyKegs are nicely explained on <a href=\"http:\/\/keykeg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their mysteriously-fancy website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(9.40) <strong>Beer of the Week #1:\u00a0Black Heart Belgian Blonde<\/strong>\u00a0(6.8%) And I really did mean to sound more complimentary when I compared it to <a title=\"Diary II entry #18: Tuatara 'Ardennes'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/09\/30\/tuatara-ardennes-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuatara &#8216;Ardennes&#8217;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(12.35) Dale, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dalesbrewing.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the eponymous Brewing Co.<\/a>, <em>is<\/em> Dale Holland, indeed.<\/li>\n<li>(14.30) <a href=\"http:\/\/moondogbrewing.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moon Dog&#8217;s website<\/a> hasn&#8217;t been updated in a while, but I think you&#8217;ll get the idea. And if you&#8217;re reading about Moon Dog, you should read about <a title=\"'Moondog', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moondog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weirdo-genius\u00a0<em>Moondog<\/em><\/a>, especially if you do so while listening to <a title=\"'Lament I, &quot;Bird's Lament&quot;', on YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jSimbyS_YlA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Lament I, Bird&#8217;s Lament&#8217;<\/a> &#8212; familiar to most of us, these days, as the basis of <a title=\"'Get A Move On', on YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MS_CLIF1h-o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Mr. Scruff track<\/a>. I&#8217;m not sure if the brewery was named after the man. I should ask. It <em>would<\/em>\u00a0suit. &lt;\/musicaldiversion&gt;<\/li>\n<li>(21.55) <strong>Best thing I had<\/strong> while I was over there: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brightbrewery.com.au\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bright Brewery<\/a> Fainter&#8217;s Dubbel. Bright is indeed in country Victoria, and this podcast is sammiched between two posted <em>Diary<\/em>\u00a0entries that include their beers. So that&#8217;s a happy coincidence.<\/li>\n<li>(24.10) <strong>My favourite bar<\/strong> in Australia, still: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.com.au\/MEL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Local Taphouse in Melbourne<\/a>. But there are <em>plenty<\/em>\u00a0of other lovely pubs, which was marvellous. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hartspub.com\/hartspub\/Home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hart&#8217;s Pub<\/a> in Sydney and pub night at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goatbeer.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mountain Goat<\/a> in Melbourne are definitely also worthy mentions.<\/li>\n<li>(27.10) Obviously, talk of GABS is a little outdated, <em>now<\/em>. Sorry about that. Hopwired IPA mostly leverages Nelson Sauvin and Motueka &#8212; not Riwaka. My (minor) bad. And here&#8217;s me showing my slackness, again. <a title=\"'Oldham's Harvest', on garageproject.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/garageproject.co.nz\/post\/22312486884\/oldhams-harvest-ale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garage Project&#8217;s &#8216;Oldham&#8217;s Farm&#8217;<\/a> wet-hop ale has almost all run out, by now.<\/li>\n<li>(39.00) A <a title=\"'Bine (botany)', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bine_(botany)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bine\u00a0<em>is<\/em> distinct from a &#8220;vine&#8221;<\/a>, it turns out. It&#8217;s a matter of how your twisted plant-bit adheres to the thing its climbing upon. <em>Vines<\/em>\u00a0use tendrils or suckers of some sort, and <em>bines<\/em>\u00a0rely on extra friction from twisting and\/or downward-spiking hairs &#8212; the <em>word<\/em>\u00a0seems to be a portmanteau of bind + vine.<\/li>\n<li>(40.30) The post (and video) about <a href=\"http:\/\/garageproject.co.nz\/post\/22367406578\/wellingtons-worst-kept-secret-aka-weve-got-a-brewery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garage Install Day<\/a> is worth a look, for sure.<\/li>\n<li>(43.20) I&#8217;ve got <a title=\"Lazy Diary entry: Mac's Brewjolais 2008\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2008\/05\/21\/macs-brewjolais-2008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post from <em>way<\/em>\u00a0back about &#8216;Brewjolais&#8217;<\/a>, which coincidentally also laments the now-<em>nearly<\/em>-fixed lack of brewing here in Wellington. I&#8217;ll let you know.<\/li>\n<li>(45.30) <strong>Recommendation #1:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Go to a beer festival<\/strong>! X-Ale was a great (boozy!) day, and everything I heard about The Auckland Hop was very positive. And Beervana 2012 tickets are selling fast already&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>(47.20) <strong>Recommendation #2: Epic &#8216;Zythos&#8217; IPA<\/strong>. I think the actual constituent hops in the mix is still a proprietary secret. <a title=\"Diary entry #80: Epic 'Mayhem'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2009\/02\/19\/epic-mayhem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epic &#8216;Mayhem&#8217;<\/a>, <em>way<\/em> back, was a real turning point for me and Luke&#8217;s beers. My &#8220;one trick pony&#8221; reference occurred in my write-up of the <a title=\"Diary II entry #48: Epic \/ Dogfish Head 'Portamarillo'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/12\/15\/epic-dogfish-head-portamarillo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epic \/ Dogfish Head &#8216;Portamarillo&#8217;<\/a> &#8212; then the thing that <em>saved<\/em>\u00a0them from that status.<\/li>\n<li>(53.00) My first thought was <a title=\"'Vinnie Jones', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vinnie_Jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vinnie Jones<\/a>, but just because he crossed into the world of Guy Ritchie movies and things and so non-sporty me knew who the hell he was. <a title=\"'Robbie Savage', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robbie_Savage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robbie Savage<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; once the &#8216;dirtiest player in history&#8217; &#8212; does seem pretty apt, too.<\/li>\n<li>(54.00) <strong>A\u00a0cautionary note: Stoke Bombers<\/strong>. <a title=\"Diary II entry #27: Stoke 'Gold' &amp; 'Amber'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/10\/20\/stoke-gold-amber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My first run-in with Stoke<\/a> and their beers did <em>not<\/em>\u00a0go well, and they just haven&#8217;t notably improved since, sadly. If you get George and I thinking back to the time we dosed a fucking-horrible Speight&#8217;s &#8220;Apricot&#8221; (scare-quotes <em>mandatory<\/em>) beer with <a href=\"http:\/\/baconsalt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacon salt<\/a> &#8212; in a vain attempt to do <em>something<\/em>\u00a0to make it less bad &#8212; then you&#8217;re not in a good way.
