I&#8217;ll probably be a little more fast-and-loose with some of the intervening entries &#8212; I do have nearly <em>ten months<\/em>\u00a0to catch up on, after all. Sheesh. (Onwards!)<\/p>\n<p>It was minutes past midnight, as the basically-anonymous 30th of June transformed into the 1st of July &#8212; Canada Day.<sup>1<\/sup> I had a few ideas burbling in my head for the much-more-famous Fourth of July and so felt some sort moral obligation to celebrate this national day further North, too. I&#8217;m a sucker for Occasion Beers, and national days make excuses for such &#8212; Australia Day being my personal favourite, <a title=\"Diary II entry #58: Little Creatures Pale Ale on Australia Day\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/01\/26\/little-creatures-pale-ale-on-australia-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">for various reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Molson isn&#8217;t any kind of <em>craft darling<\/em>; it&#8217;s ultra-massive mainstream golden lager. But I can happily report that it&#8217;s <em>not crap<\/em>. Great Responsibility.&#8221; It&#8217;s mere inches away from quoting <em>Spiderman<\/em>, which makes me very happy indeed, giant nerd that I admittedly am. Obviously, the logic of it doesn&#8217;t go through, since this is very definitely <em>not<\/em>\u00a0\u201cgreat beer\u201d, but it&#8217;s a rather delightful way of putting things, all the same. I&#8217;d suggest that other people adopt the phrase, but it turns out that they went and trademarketed it, the hockey-loving bastards. I&#8217;m a sucker for an Occasion Beer, and had never had this, so here we go. Doesn&#8217;t really deserve a reputation as a Budweiser of the North. Is perfectly clean and easy. Would be a very comfortable 2nd place in the above, for example. Only the merest hint of funk on the nose, otherwise a good example of lawnmoweresque blandness-as-a-virtue.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>1:<\/strong> The Blessed Wikipedia assures me that, here in New Zealand and Australia, the first of July is \u2018<a title=\"'Tartan Day', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tartan_Day\" target=\"_blank\">International Tartan Day<\/a>\u2019, which I hadn&#8217;t previously heard of &#8212; though it does seem to have a nicely <em>defiant<\/em>\u00a0origin, which I could probably get behind.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>2:<\/strong> It got something of an airing in the write-ups of <a title=\"Diary II entry #108: Invercargill 'Sa!son'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/03\/invercargill-sason\/\" target=\"_blank\">Invercargill &#8216;Sa!son&#8217;<\/a>, <a title=\"Diary II entry #80: Budweiser\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/24\/budweiser\/\" target=\"_blank\">Budweiser<\/a>, and <a title=\"Diary II entry #27: Stoke 'Gold' &amp; 'Amber'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/10\/20\/stoke-gold-amber\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Stoke beers<\/a>, among other random mentions here and there.
