The Oscars for 2011 releases only happened this week, after all, and we don&#8217;t have their kind of budget \u2014\u00a0or Billy Crystal. Worth knowing.<\/li>\n<li>(5.30) How could we \u2014\u00a0particularly, how could <em>I<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 not be late with a Year in Review?<\/li>\n<li>(8.00) Ben &#8216;Yahtzee&#8217; Crowshaw is rapidly amassing <a title=\"'Zero Punctuation', on The Escapist (the largest chunk, by far, of said body)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/videos\/view\/zero-punctuation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a brilliant body of work<\/a> (this, of course is what happens when you post regularly\u00a0\u2014 he says, chastising himself). He&#8217;s largely dropped the &#8216;Awards&#8217; pretence, but they were great fun. Flash all the way back, for example, to <a title=\"Zero Punctuation: Awards for 2008\" href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/videos\/view\/zero-punctuation\/486-Awards-for-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2008<\/a> or <a title=\"Zero Punctuation: Awards for 2009\" href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/videos\/view\/zero-punctuation\/1367-Awards-for-2009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">0<\/span>9<\/a> to see for yourself. 2008\u2019s opening rant, particularly, helped me justify to myself the more-freewheeling nature of my <em>Diary<\/em>\u00a0entries.<\/li>\n<li>(8.50) Greg Norman was &#8216;The Great White Shark&#8217;, apparently. Points to neither of us.<\/li>\n<li>(9.00) <strong>Blog of the Year: Alice Galletly&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Beer for a Year\" href=\"http:\/\/beerforayear.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Beer for a Year&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>. We were actually recording, serendipitously enough, <a title=\"'More WTF, FAQ, ETC!'\" href=\"http:\/\/beerforayear.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/08\/more-wtf-faq-etc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the very day she hit halfway<\/a>. And, speaking of year-long projects worth knowing about, the throw-away reference I made was to the genuinely-entertaining <a title=\"'A. J. Jacobs', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A._J._Jacobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A. J. Jacobs<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 his <em>The Year of Living Biblically <\/em>\u00a0was a Christmas present to me from George and his wife Robyn one year.<\/li>\n<li>(11.30) <strong>Website of the Year: <a title=\"Craft Beer Capital (.com)\" href=\"http:\/\/craftbeercapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">craftbeercapital.com<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>(15.50) The &#8220;growler&#8221; story is developing rapidly\u2026 Doubtless I&#8217;ll get back to it.<\/li>\n<li>(17.00) <strong>2011,\u00a0Year of the x:\u00a0The Beer Bar<\/strong>. I\u00a0<em>really<\/em> need to get myself to Auckland and Christchurch to catch up with the scenes, there. It says a lot that, as a Wellington beer geek, I&#8217;m starting to get seriously jealous and frequently struck by the &#8220;damnit, I&#8217;m missing out&#8221; feeling. Weirdly, the <em>local<\/em> new bars didn&#8217;t spring to my mind as we were recording, but 2011 saw us blessed with the arrival of The Hop Garden and LBQ (Little Beer Quarter), as well\u00a0\u2014 and not-quite-so-blessed with a few other&#8230; shall we say&#8230; craft-beer-<em>themed<\/em>\u00a0bars.<\/li>\n<li>(23.00) <a title=\"Adrien Brody's Oscar acceptance speech\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8HgWANva9Xk\">Adrien Brody&#8217;s speech<\/a> <em>really<\/em>, unfairly irritated me. It&#8217;s a thing, with me\u00a0\u2014 but that might also partially be down to some Roman Polanski-related grumbles.<\/li>\n<li>(23.20) <strong>Beer of the Year: Matilda Bay &#8216;Fat Yak&#8217; (for George) and Hallertau &#8216;Minimus&#8217; (for Phil)<\/strong>. We drank Fat Yak for <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e02: Beer and Marketing\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/04\/16\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episode II<\/a>, and I said nice things about its reliable Gatewayability <a title=\"Diary II entry #54: Matilda Bay 'Fat Yak'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/01\/10\/matilda-bay-fat-yak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in my <em>Diary<\/em><\/a>. I&#8217;ve had a <a title=\"Diary II entry #36: Hallertau 'Minimus'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/11\/18\/hallertau-minimus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long-running love affair with Minimus<\/a>, and it helped inspire <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e04: Midstrength Beer\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/01\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episode IV<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(29.20) <strong><em>Favourite<\/em> Beer of Year:\u00a0Garage Project &#8216;Day of the Dead&#8217; (for Phil) and Liberty &#8216;C!tra&#8217; (for George)<\/strong>. And it seems I&#8217;m not alone\u00a0\u2014not that <em>that<\/em>\u00a0thought worries me, in this field, or many others\u00a0\u2014 the guys at the Garage Project released <a href=\"http:\/\/garageproject.co.nz\/post\/18099677948\/24-24-wrap-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a little &#8216;report&#8217; on feedback for the 24\/24 series<\/a> of beers, and &#8220;DotD&#8221; came out on top. &#8216;C!tra&#8217; was beer of the week last time, for <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e08: Strong Beer\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/06\/27\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episode VIII<\/a>, and it really was crackingly good fun stuff.<\/li>\n<li>(32.30) George really did (eventually) get this right; he got married in late 2005.<\/li>\n<li>(33.30) <strong>Pleasant Surprise: Golden Ticket &#8216;Black Emperor&#8217;, with an honorable mention for Moa Imperial Stout (for Phil) and This Very Podcast Itself (for George)<\/strong>. I&#8217;m a grumpy bastard in many ways, but I&#8217;m no dogmatist; I genuinely enjoy the cleansing feeling of changing my mind, and <a title=\"Diary II entry #77: Golden Ticket 'Black Emperor: NZ'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/22\/golden-ticket-black-emperor-nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Emperor did exactly that<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>(38.40) <strong>Best Experimentation: The Yeastie Boys &#8216;Blondies&#8217;, with an honorable mention for the Liberty &#8216;Blondes&#8217; (for Phil) and The Garage Project itself (for George), with particular nods for their green bean saison and the Grordbort beers<\/strong>. And seriously, flip back to George&#8217;s &#8220;live&#8221; tasting of Rex, way back in <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s01e03: Winter Beers\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/05\/14\/beer-diary-podcast-s01e03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episode III<\/a>; I think it remains a classic.<\/li>\n<li>(46.30) <strong>Best Beer Moment: A three-way tie between Day of the Dead, <a title=\"Diary II entry #83: The Trappist Dance Card\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/03\/29\/the-trappist-dance-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Trappist Dance Card<\/a>, and &#8216;Angry Peaches&#8217; at the Town Hall (for Phil)\u00a0and quietly re-discovering &#8216;Discovery&#8217; at Br\u00fchaus\u00a0(for George)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>(52.00) <strong>Midstrength News<\/strong>\u00a0is that I didn&#8217;t do my midstrength-related homework. George here is channelling the <a title=\"Thrilling Adventure Hour, on Nerdist.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nerdist.com\/podcast\/thrilling-adventure-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thrilling Adventure Hour<\/a>, a favourite of his.<\/li>\n<li>(52.30) <strong>Recommendation:<\/strong>\u00a0Stone &amp; Wood &#8216;Pacific Ale&#8217;.
