My feeble cellphone camera photo, of course, doesn&#8217;t do it justice but the lighting was captured perfectly; the daylight breaking through but not destroying the cozy dim of the tavern with its cross-section of drinkers \u2014 one solitary, one pair, one group. It&#8217;s half a world and over a hundred year removed from me, but I have been all of those people at different times, and I feel as if I can hear that room from here.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m always interested in how beer and pubs are represented in the wider culture; it&#8217;s why I <a href=\"https:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2025\/03\/21\/beer-nytxw-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catalogue references in the crossword<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2025\/04\/23\/beer-in-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collected examples from games I&#8217;ve played<\/a>. Other writers have introduced me to some excellent examples: Alan McLeod <a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2017\/10\/19\/gord-downie-and-al-purdys-poem-at-the-quinte-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared a poem<\/a> that&#8217;s stuck with me for years, Boak &amp; Bailey always <a href=\"https:\/\/boakandbailey.com\/beer-in-fiction-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keep an eye out<\/a>, too \u2014 and I&#8217;m haunted by a now-lost post I loved that tried to nail down <em>which<\/em> &#8220;ice cold beer&#8221; The Kinks had in mind for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pzSWNEBdsVg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunny Afternoon<\/a>. So let&#8217;s have more, please.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to interpret &#8220;art&#8221; and &#8220;fiction&#8221; as broadly as you like.<span id='easy-footnote-2-27588' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2025\/05\/06\/the-session-147-invite\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-27588' title='&lt;span style=&quot;font-size: small;&quot;&gt;My only proviso is that it&amp;#8217;s the product of conscious thought. I&amp;#8217;m interested in that interaction with culture and psychology, so machine-generated examples aren&amp;#8217;t what I&amp;#8217;m after here. At least, not until I can meaningfully have a beer and a chat with a robot.&lt;\/span&gt;'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Film, TV, music, games, poetry, prose, painting, a particularly pointed piece of graffiti; whatever. Don&#8217;t feel obliged to pick a single favourite. A random grab-bag of examples would be wonderful \u2014 though a carefully-selected set that illustrates a trend or theme is of course welcome, too.
