I&#8217;ve also added &#8216;show notes&#8217; to each beer here, to provide references \/ ramblings \/ corrections as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hopefully-temporary note, 31 May 2011:<\/strong> Apologies for the absence of an in-post player. The whatsit that was generating those turns out to be conflicting with the whatsit that handles the gorgeous pop-up display doodads for my photos and <em>Diary<\/em> scans. As you can tell by the handwavey substitute-words, there, I&#8217;m not <em>quite<\/em> geeky enough to sort that out on my own, just yet. And since <em>every<\/em> post has pop-up images, but <em>only this one<\/em> had audio files in this format, something had to give. They should still work as downloads or as in-browser plays, though&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8212; #1:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.1-Tui.mp3\">Tui &#8220;East India Pale Ale&#8221;<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Solid data is hard to come by &#8212; questionable brewery press releases or absurdly expensive market reports don&#8217;t really count &#8212; but us New Zealanders do drink <em>masses<\/em> of this stuff and its barely-discernibly-different siblings. I&#8217;ve never heard anyone outside of a state of enthusiasm-induced delirium suggest that craft beer accounts for more than 10% of sales.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"'Six o'clock swill', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six_o'clock_swill\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Six o&#8217;clock swill&#8217;<\/a> lasted longer than I thought: Pre-WWI to post-WWII. How unforgiveably dim that it spanned a whole generation.<\/li>\n<li>Tui <em>is<\/em> conspicuously sweeter than its otherwise-samey brethren (from my memory, at least), so I always believed the story that it was literally coloured-up with caramel. <em>Hopefully<\/em> they just use some sweeter, darker malt, but I doubt it &#8212; D.B. have conspicuously skirted the &#8216;sugar question&#8217; on their website.<\/li>\n<li>Likewise, D.B. aren&#8217;t massively forthcoming on <em>which<\/em> beers continue to use <a title=\"'Morton W. Coutts (Continuous fermentation)', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morton_W._Coutts#Continuous_fermentation_method\" target=\"_blank\">continuous fermentation<\/a>. Their <a title=\"'How Beer is Made', on db.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/db.co.nz\/OurProducts\/AllAboutBeer\/HowBeerismade.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;How Beer is Made&#8217;<\/a> flowchart just silently splits in half and doesn&#8217;t bother to say which beers take which route.<\/li>\n<li>The confused and depressing Tui ratings I mention can be easily found on <a title=\"'Tui East India Pale Ale', on ratebeer.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ratebeer.com\/beer\/tui-east-india-pale-ale\/1449\/\" target=\"_blank\">RateBeer.com<\/a> and <a title=\"'Tui East India Pale Ale', on beeradvocate.com\" href=\"http:\/\/beeradvocate.com\/beer\/profile\/950\/3069\" target=\"_blank\">BeerAdvocate.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And seriously, <a title=\"'Penny-farthing', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penny-farthing\" target=\"_blank\">Penny-farthings<\/a> are as fascinating as they are stupid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8212; #2: <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.2-Emersons-Pilsner.mp3\">Emerson&#8217;s Pilsner<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There <em>was<\/em> a <a title=\"'German Confederation', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_Confederation\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Germany&#8221;<\/a> when Pilsner was developed (in 18-<em>42<\/em>, not 18-<em>seventy-mumble<\/em>), but it&#8217;s not the <a title=\"'Germany', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Germany&#8221;<\/a> we have now. European history is <em>complicated<\/em> and seemingly nowhere more so than Deutschland &#8212; but I&#8217;m told that Bavarians are basically still Bavarian first, German second, anyway.<\/li>\n<li>My &#8216;history and context of pilsner&#8217; is roughly cribbed from <a title=\"petebrown.blogspot.com\" href=\"http:\/\/petebrown.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Brown<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And I don&#8217;t mean to short-change this bloody-marvellous beer; we did talk a <em>lot<\/em> more about it (I feel guilty that its chapter is shorter than Tui&#8217;s, I admit), but it was peppered with frequent sidetrackings as we tried to find a suitable North American substitute &#8212; <em>still<\/em> with no success, by the way; suggestions welcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8212; #3: <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.3-Tuatara-APA.mp3\">Tuatara APA<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Jessie had <a title=\"Diary II entry #35: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/11\/15\/sierra-nevada-pale-ale\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously described herself<\/a> as hailing from &#8220;within crawling distance&#8221; of the Sierra Nevada Brewery.<\/li>\n<li>The hops used (at launch) were described in <a title=\"'Tuatara APA Unleashed on Unsuspecting World', on tuatarabeers.blogspot.com\" href=\"http:\/\/tuatarabeers.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/tuatara-apa-unleashed-on-unsuspecting.html\" target=\"_blank\">an official blog post<\/a>. I believe they&#8217;ve recently (i.e., after this tasting) joined in several other breweries in switching (largely? partially?) to the new <a title=\"'Falconer's Flight and Pellet Blends', on the Beervana blog (nothing to do with NZ's Beervana Beer Festival)\" href=\"http:\/\/beervana.blogspot.com\/2010\/12\/falconers-flight-and-pellet-blends.html\" target=\"_blank\">Falconer&#8217;s Flight<\/a> hop blend. The flavour certainly changed around a bit rather suddenly &#8212; not for the worst, necessarily, but I still think it&#8217;s rather poor form to not, you know, <em>say so<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>As I finally write this up, Tuatara APA is two weeks shy of its First Birthday, and is <em>still<\/em> branded &#8220;Limited Release&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"'Synesthesia', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synesthesia\" target=\"_blank\">Synethesia<\/a> is both inherently interesting and very useful for describing beers &#8212; at least in this near-metaphorical, non-pathological form. <em>Flavour<\/em> seems somehow more subjective than the feel \/ mood \/ overall thingness you can sometimes convey if you employ peculiar and emotive similies instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8212; #4: <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.4-8-Wired-Hopwired.mp3\">8 Wired &#8216;Hopwired&#8217; IPA<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"'Number 8 wire', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Number_8_wire\" target=\"_blank\">Number 8 wire<\/a> isn&#8217;t named for a metric <em>or<\/em> imperial sizing; it\u00a0was just a more-or-less abritrarily-numbered step on the <a title=\"'Standard wire gauge', on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_wire_gauge\" target=\"_blank\">British Standard Wire Gauge<\/a>. As the son of an engineer, I can&#8217;t tell you how horrified I am to hear myself saying (even for a brief, uncertain and recanted second) that it was 8mm &#8212; it&#8217;s around\u00a0<em>half<\/em> that, sheesh.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve gotten the <a title=\"'Background', on 8wired.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/8wired.co.nz\/background\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00f8ren-and-Monique story<\/a> a little mangled; I blame the fact that for ages, S\u00f8ren was too busy making good beer to have time to get a website built, so I had to rely on third-hand biographical snippets passed around the Beer Nerd community.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"plantandfood.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plantandfood.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plant &amp; Food Research<\/a> is the current name of the government-owned entity responsible for <a title=\"'Hops', on plantandfood.co.nz (notably listed in the &quot;Key Crops&quot; section)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plantandfood.co.nz\/page\/our-research\/breeding-genomics\/key-crops\/hops\/\" target=\"_blank\">hop research and development<\/a>. <a title=\"'Hop Varieties', on nzhops.co.nz\" href=\"http:\/\/nzhops.co.nz\/varieties\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">NZ Hops<\/a> is someone you can actually <em>buy<\/em> these things from, and provides very handy \/ very nerdy data sheets for the different cultivars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8212; #5: <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.6-Epic-Portamarillo.mp3\">Epic \/ Dogfish Head &#8216;Portamarillo&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>My <a title=\"Beer 121: New Zealand Beer for Americans\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2011\/02\/22\/beer-121-new-zealand-beer-for-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\">original post<\/a> has <em>this<\/em> as Beer #6, but it&#8217;s just occurred to me (listening to myself refer to PKB as the one we&#8217;ll &#8220;finish off with&#8221;) that that&#8217;s wrong. It was the <em>plan<\/em> (as you can see from the lineup photo), but we decided to step away from hoppy things so we could step back, fresher.<\/li>\n<li>From what I can tell, the Beer Nerd Biography Whisper Mill let me down a little here, too. Sam wasn&#8217;t a Levi&#8217;s model as a pre-brewing job, he did a Levi&#8217;s shoot <em>as<\/em> a brewer. I think. Google is still letting me down a little, here. The point remains, though, that you have to admit he&#8217;s a good-looking man.<\/li>\n<li>There is a <a title=\"'Brew Masters', on discovery.com\" href=\"http:\/\/dsc.discovery.com\/tv\/brew-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Brew Masters&#8217;<\/a> TV show website &#8212; and, you know, ahem, torrents.<\/li>\n<li>Three Boys &#8216;Pineapple Lump&#8217; Porter got deservedly-good <a title=\"Three Boys Pineapple Lump Porter, on ratebeer.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ratebeer.com\/beer\/three-boys-pineapple-lump-porter\/129590\/\" target=\"_blank\">write-ups online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I had both the Epic \/ Dogfish Head &amp; Dogfish Head \/ Epic versions together when <a title=\"Diary II entry #41: Epic \/ Dogfish Head 'Portamarillo'\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2010\/12\/15\/epic-dogfish-head-portamarillo\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Portamarillo&#8217; first appeared in my <em>Diary<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8212; #6: <a href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beer-121.5-Yeastie-Boys-PKB-US-Remix.mp3\">Yeastie Boys &#8216;PKB 2010 U.S. Remix&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I finally had a bigger dose of this stuff just a few days before writing this up. The &#8216;New Guy&#8217; at work, Jono, brought in a bottle which he generously halved.
