I first met him back in my Malthouse bartending days, at the debut of Pot Kettle Black, and it&#8217;s been excellent knowing him since. He was an early giver-of-encouraging-nudges to this very\u00a0<i>Beer Diary<\/i> project, is officially a <a title=\"Beer Diary Podcast s03e06: Stu McKinlay\" href=\"http:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2013\/11\/24\/s03e06-stu-mckinlay\/\" target=\"_blank\">Friend Of The Show<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0can frequently be found here disproving the old maxim of Don&#8217;t Read The Comments. Contract brewers from day one\u00a0\u2014\u00a0with no pretensions to have or intentions to build a &#8220;bricks and mortar&#8221; HQ\u00a0\u2014\u00a0they&#8217;ve found themselves freer to sidestep some of the annoying and complicated business of exporting and simply produce beer closer to its intended market. I find this kind of &#8216;Distributed Republic&#8217;<a href=\"#fn-farewell2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-farewell2\"><\/a> model really appealing, not least because it lessens the shipping-around of masses of water and packaging materials. And <em>this<\/em> is altogether a more-promising example of the phenomenon: morally better than Stone&#8217;s recent and rather-disingenuous &#8216;campaign&#8217;<a href=\"#fn-farewell3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-farewell3\"><\/a> to build breweries on the far U.S. coast and in Europe, and more loud-and-proud than ParrotDog and Panhead&#8217;s current\u00a0contracting of keg beer in Melbourne for Australian\u00a0consumption.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s to good people making good money from good beer. And to a homegrown business expanding out into the world in a new, interesting and authentic way \u2014 not by resorting to distasteful nonsense,<a href=\"#fn-farewell4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-farewell4\"><\/a> nor by subsuming itself within an existing conglomerate.<a href=\"#fn-farewell5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-farewell5\"><\/a>\u00a0I hope locals will raise a glass of beer\u00a0(or a cup of tea, or a dram of whisky, since\u00a0they&#8217;d all be appropriate)<a href=\"#fn-farewell6\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><a name=\"tag-farewell6\"><\/a> to toast their progress and speed Stu on his way. Please do look after him for us, Englishpersons and Other Antipodeans. I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll enjoy his company \u2014 in both senses of the word.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-farewell1\"><\/a><strong>1:<\/strong> That&#8217;s him in the red pants, above, despite the title of this post, which just occurred to me while I was doing the dishes and wouldn&#8217;t get out of my brain until I wrote it down. It seemed vaguely punny and fitting for a celebrated colour-blocker moving to the other side of the world.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-farewell1\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-farewell2\"><\/a><strong>2:<\/strong> To borrow a phrase \/ idea I&#8217;m most familiar with via Neal Stephenson&#8217;s <em>Snow Crash<\/em> and <em>Diamond Age<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 though I&#8217;m not madly keen on the association it has with libertarian techbros, to say the least.<em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"#tag-farewell2\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-farewell3\"><\/a><strong>3:<\/strong> A story which went down mid-last-year, while I was on De Facto Hiatus and it was too much of a clusterfuck for me to manage to say anything much constructive. Glen Humphries&#8217; trio of posts \u2014 the <a title=\"Beer Is Your Friend: The Stone Brewing cash grab\" href=\"http:\/\/beerisyourfriend.org\/2014\/07\/21\/is-stone-brewing-misleading-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">cash grab<\/a>, the <a title=\"Beer Is Your Friend: The Stone Brewing screw-up\" href=\"http:\/\/beerisyourfriend.org\/2014\/07\/24\/stone-slashes-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\">screw-up<\/a>, and the <a title=\"Beer Is Your Friend: The Stone Brewing cover-up\" href=\"http:\/\/beerisyourfriend.org\/2014\/08\/05\/the-stone-brewing-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">cover-up<\/a> \u2014 is excellent coverage from the time.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-farewell3\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-farewell4\"><\/a><strong>4:<\/strong> By now, surely, you know who I mean.\u00a0<a href=\"#tag-farewell4\">\u2191<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a name=\"fn-farewell5\"><\/a><strong>5:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e0 la Emerson&#8217;s, of course, most recently and locally and notoriously. Not that that always goes badly, of course.
